- BJP resorts to anti-Pakistan sloganeering in Assembly
Akhnoor: Three General Reserve Engineer Force personnel were killed after unidentified gunmen attacked a GREF camp in Jammu district on Monday morning. The attack took place in Battal area near the Line of Control that divides India and Pakistan, police said.
Divulging information about the attack, police official told news agency CNS that suspected militants emerged outside GREF near Battal area of Akhnoor region at around 1:15 am and resorted to indiscriminate firing on the GREF workers staying there. “The gunmen shortly after the attacked managed to escape from the spot, however, reinforcement was called in and a massive search operation was launched to nab the assailants,” he said.
The GREF is the parent cadre force of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that builds and maintains border roads across India
Meanwhile, opposition National Conference and Congress legislators raked up the issue in the Assembly and
sought response from the government. The lawmakers disrupted the proceedings during Question Hour.
“Three jawans were killed and we do not know what happened,” NCs Devinder Singh Rana said, while all the members of the NC and Congress stood on their respective benches. “Where has the 56 inch chest gone missing? Was it just a militant attack or the surgical strike by Pakistan?” The opposition intervention infuriated the treasury benches. Some BJP lawmakers resorted to sloganeering against Pakistan.
Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti while condemning attack underscored the need for working together to end the cycle of violence and bloodshed in the State. Mehbooba Mufti conveyed her sympathies with the families of slain GREF workers. (CNS)
