Pugwash Security Moot on Kashmir, Palestine to open in Berlin
ISLAMABAD: A 2-day multi-spectrum security conference by Pugwash on Kashmir, Palestine, Iran’s regional role, economic rise of China and its impact on East Asia, is being held in Berlin, Germany, on June 29-30, 2011.
The conference, says an open Pugwash cyber invitation, will focus on relationship between regional and global security impact on the Middle East, South Asia and South East Asia. Global young scholars/students are being associated with this important debating event.
The specific discussion areas picked up relate to a permanent solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict as a condition for security and stability in the Middle East region, Iran’s regional role, Kashmir and the relationship between nuclear powers in South Asia (Pakistan and India), the impact of rising China on the security of the East Asian region.
Other topics include nuclear energy and nonproliferation, regional and global (nuke) zero, growing impact of civil society and experience culled from recent examples of Egypt and Iran.
Six working groups during the 2-day conference will be formed on (1) Nuclear Disarmament, Nonproliferation after the 2010 NPT Review Conference (2) Prospects for Peace and Security in the Middle East (3) Regional Stability in Central and South Asia: the situation in Afghanistan, and Indo-Pakistani relations (4) European Security and nuclear disarmament (5) Social Responsibility of Scientists: Nuclear Security 6. Non-Military Threats: Climate Change, Energy and Resources.
