After overnight clashes curfew imposed in Palhalan

Pattan: After overnight clashes in North Kashmir’s Palhalan area of Pattan town, strict curfew was imposed on Sunday and no one was allowed to venture out from his house. At least 16 people including ten policemen were injured in violent clashes on Saturday night which erupted in the area after the arrest of a shopkeeper.

Reports said that police CRPF personnel were deployed in strength to foil any kind of protest in Palhalan area. Undeclared curfew was imposed and people were directed to stay indoors. Streets of Palhalan and its adjacent areas wore deserted look. Concertina wires were laid down and mobile bunkers were erected to thwart protests.

People alleged that they were even not allowed to enter into Masjid for prayers. “So many policemen and CRPF personnel had cordoned the Masjid and were not allowing anyone to enter into it for prayers,” one of the residents told CNS.

Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Ghulam Ahmed Khawaja told CNS that he has not ordered for the imposition of curfew in the town. “There is no curfew and only the restrictions to thwart protests,” he said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir, J.P.Singh told CNS that due to overnight clashes between protestors and police, restriction were imposed on the movement of people. “As a precautionary measure, people were asked to stay indoors. There is no curfew but only restrictions,” Singh said.

Police sources told CNS that at least 16 people including the driver of SP Baramula was injured during the clashes. Some of the injured policemen have been identified as Manzoor Ahmed (393/B), Fayaz Ahmed (173), Rajesh Singh (882), Tariq Ahmed (429), Mukhtar Ahmed (113), Chander Singh, Ghulam Jeelani (609), Mohammad Iqbal Lone, Mansoor Ahmed (1672) and Shabir Ahmed belt number 995.
