Srinagar: A fierce gunfight between militants and government forces is underway on Srinagar-Jammu highway near Pantha Chowk in outskirt’s of Srinagar.
Traffic on the strategic thoroughfare was severely affected with commuters especially from south Kashmir facing difficulties reaching home on eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The gunfight between militants, holed up in famous educational institution (Delhi Public School) and joint team of forces started wee hours and since then it continues unabated.
Sources told news agency Global News Service (GNS) that massive blasts were heard in the area since the gunfight started, creating panic in the entire area.
So far there are no reports about any causality on either side.
Meanwhile, in a bid to prevent civilian casualties authorities have restricted traffic towards Dalgate as well as towards Pantha Chowk. The authorities on late Saturday evening had already imposed , with immediate effect, the restrictions on movement of people under 144 CrPc.
The authorities have also snapped high speed 3G /4G internet services across Kashmir Valley.
Pertinently, Cordon-and-search-operation was launched after Government forces suspected presence of militants inside the famous educational institution, Delhi Public School (DPS) or any other building adjacent to it, soon after the militants carried attack on paramilitary CRPF convoy, killing an Assistant Sub Inspector and injuring a constable driver of the paramilitary forces.
