Civic Face Pakistan organizes a vigil for Reyhaneh Jabbari
Islamabad: Civic Face Pakistan, a youth activist forum on human rights and social democracy organized a vigil for Reyhaneh Jabbari, a 26 years old Iranian woman who was executed few days back. Reyhaneh was accused of a murder of an ex military official of Iran who raped her. The rape victim was imprisoned for almost 5 years before she was executed.
International community pleaded for a retrial of the case as Reyhaneh’s confession was taken under severe threats and torture. This was revealed in a letter written by Reyhaneh from inside the prison to her mother.
The execution led to a mass anger in the world which can be seen on social media around the world. A large number of students, social activists and people from civil society attended the vigil. They chanted slogans against the theocratic regime in Iran and violation of basic human rights. Speakers addressed the gathering showing their solidarity with Reyhaneh and demanded a retrial of the case. Reyhaneh’s letter to her mother was also read which turned the gathering emotional.
Candles were lit and silence of one minute was observed at the venue. Speakers also condemned the violence against minorities in Pakistan, especially target killing of Hazara community in Pakistan.
