Kashmir: Brother of Incarcerated Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir arrested

Islamabad (Kashmir): The Ummat e Islami Jammu Kashmir has strongly condemned the arrest of Qazi Umair – the brother of its Chairman and Mirwaiz South Kashmir, Qazi Ahmed Yasir, who is also in custody for over a month.

On Sunday night, a police party raided the Qazi Manzil and picked up Qazi Umair, who works in a private technology company in Srinagar. He was taken to police station Sherbagh and continues to be detained. The police has not given any details but only said they need to question him.

“The authorities have been continuously harassing the Qazi family and slapping different cases against all brothers of Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir. This is not first time, in past also other brothers, cousins and friends have been arrested. We demand release of both Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir and his brother and urge the police to stop this harassment,” a party spokesperson said.

The incarcerated Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir, who has been in custody for a month now, called this revenge strategy. He said that if the authorities have issues with my politics, they should deal with me directly rather than my family or friends.

Mirwaiz Qazi Yasir also welcomed the statements of Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and foreign minister that dialogue is the only way to solve any conflict. “Such statements should not be confined to words only but should be acted upon. India should initiate dialogue over Kashmir issue, and include Kashmiris in it. There is no other to peace in the sub-continent,” he said.
